This self portrait is meant to express the different emotions within one’s self. This particular self portrait represents anger. It’s loosely based on the idea of the seven deadly sins Anger, lust, sloth, gluttony, pride, greed and envy. I can now go on to potentially create a set of images of all of the seven deadly sins done in the same visual style.
I originally set out with the intention of practicing with a long shutter speed and seeing what different techniques I could use to manipulate an image. I wanted to manipulate the effect of light on the image because I was intrigued by the thought that there cannot be an image without light.
So I decided to use the light in different ways. I did this by taking a picture in a completely blacked out room. Whilst using a lamp as the only light source to create shapes within the image. I was constantly turning the light on and off and moving into different positions until I got the effect of multiple versions of me within one photo.
I thought the style of the image looked quite scary and even ghostly and I wanted to incorporate a theme towards the image. I decided on the seven deadly sins because of a test photograph I had done of 3 different exposures of me. Which made it look like I had 3 different personalities. One was angry one was scared and the other was calm. And it reminded me of the seven deadly sins because of this.
